If a Stony Plain contractor has told you your sewer line needs replacing, you have more than one way to do it. Lining, pipe bursting and dig-and-replace each fit different lines. We explain which fits yours, and why.
Three options
Trenchless lining (CIPP). A resin-soaked liner is inflated inside the old pipe and hardens into a new, seamless one. Little or no digging. Suits long lines, 100 feet or more. May not work for very short lines (about 15 feet or less) or lines with multiple connections. Best done in warmer months so the epoxy cures properly.
Pipe bursting. A new pipe is pulled through the old path as the old pipe is broken outward. Good when the pipe is too damaged to line. The water line often runs a few inches away and can be put at risk. It can’t fix a belly or slope problem.
Dig and replace. A trench along the line, old pipe out, new pipe in at the right slope. The most disruptive, but the only fix for a sagging line.

How we choose
- Camera the line. Length, connections, condition and slope.
- Locate the water line if pipe bursting is on the table.
- Recommend one method and tell you why the others don’t fit as well.
- Quote it in writing, with what’s included.
Timing
Winter is for camera inspections and clearing blocked lines. Lining jobs are booked for warmer months.
Who pays
Which part of the sewer line is yours, and whether there’s a backwater valve rebate, depends on the municipality. We didn’t find published rules or a rebate for Stony Plain, so check with the Town of Stony Plain before booking work.
Repairs to service lines on your property aren’t typically covered by a basic homeowner’s insurance policy, according to EPCOR. Ask your broker.

Questions people ask
Is trenchless always cheaper?
Not always. It depends on the line. Trenchless avoids trenching the yard, but lines with a belly or slope problem need excavation regardless.
Can lining be done in winter?
Lining is best done in warmer months so the epoxy cures properly. In winter we inspect and plan for spring.
